BADKHEN DIET

Object is to HEAT the system REGULARLY 
An Indian-type diet is good - HOT, LIGHT AND DRY
Cool and Heavy nature seeks sour and sweet 

FOODS TO REMEDY BADKHEN:
HOT, SOUR, SALTY, ASTRINGENT

Lamb, yak(game meat), fish  (very beneficial, but not fish and chips, too much oil) chicken.
Salty foods, anchovies.
Green/red peppers, chilli, sprouts,  spinach, onion and garlic (though garlic can be heavy), spring onions, coriander, fennel, sage, leeks, horseradish, basil, cloves. 
Ripened fruits, dry fruits, pomegranates, cranberries, oranges,  peaches, mangoes, strawberries, bilberries, kumquats, figs.
Basmati rice, millet, sunflower seeds, coconut
Lentils and legumes
Freshly ground flour products, porridge made from grain grown in hot area
Yoghurt, buttermilk, honey (instead of sugar)

Oranges against bronchitis
Black pepper, salt, heating spices, ginger, cinnamon, cardomom 

INHERENT QUALITIES TO PACIFY BADKHEN:

COARSE, ROUGH, LIGHT, DRY
Heat - Yak, buffalo, pomegranate 
Acrid - hot chilli 
Coarse/Rough - coffee, rabbit flesh, flesh of carnivorous animals
Light - poultry, flesh of 4-legged animals
Hot - foods grown in a sunny, dry environment

Secondary qualities: 
Dry - foods grown in a hot, dry environment 
Fatlessness - pulses and other foods with little or not fat content 
Heat - foods grown in a hot, sunny environment, buffalo meat, pomegranate
Dry -   as above

Cooked radish promotes the digestive heat
 

BEVERAGES FOR BADKHEN:

Lemon, honey and ginger (+ whisky), also glu wine, or mulled wine, old red wine with heating spices and honey.
Aged liquors such as whisky and brandy
Sweet liquors such as Port, Madeira, Muscatel and sweet sherry should be taken only occasionally.
Tea and coffee ok for Badkhen (Light and Rough) 
Herbal and fruit teas, blackberry, lemon and ginger, orange, teas with the heating spices cinnamon, clove, ginger, liquorice, nutmeg etc. (e.g. YOGI teas)
Nettle tea
Curd and buttermilk, 
 

FOODS TO AGGRAVATE BADKHEN

SWEET, BITTER, ASTRINGENT  - cool, oily, heavy, fatty, raw and stale food.

Un-boiled milk is HEAVY AND COLD, promotes parasites.
Cold milk, cold drinks from fridge,cold fruit juices.
Salad, raw fruits or vegetables.
Spinach and other foods grown in an environment having a strong element of Earth.
Raw foods,  unripe fruit with indigestible, heavy qualities, AVOID COLD LEFT-OVERS 
Bananas, melons, coconut, dates, papaya, pineapples, grapefruit, grapes, apples (Water + Earth, therefore heavy),carrots, aubergine, white rice,  ice-cream. pork, beef, sugar, tofu, cauliflower, peanut butter. 
No potatoes  or cabbage -sweet and heavy and cool.  Also asparagus.
Rice in moderation only, heavy, greasy, cold. Oat porridge, in moderation only, heavy greasy and cold. Try porridge made with maize meal or roasted barley instead.
Wheat products - bread and cake, in moderation only.

Cooked nettles stimulate DIGESTIVE HEAT,  aggravate Badkhen and Tipa, but alleviate Lung. 

In  general, all fresh (under 1 year old) grains are wet, heavy and irritate Badkhen.  Grains that are ripe or over one year old and DRIED are light in nature and recommended for gen. diet. 

VEG.OILS - Habitual use of vegetable oil - internal heat and digestion stimulated;  tissues nourished, sense organs made stronger

Tibetan dietary advice considers the following food combinations unwholesome:
Fish and milk,  fish and eggs, meat and milk, yoghurt and beef, yoghourt and chicken, yoghurt and pea soup, sour fruits and milk, 
Milk and animal (fish and/or meat) together in one meal cause digestive upsets ó different parts of the stomach must process the different substances which leading to indigestion and ëheartburní.

STALE FOOD REDUCES THE DIGESTIVE HEAT 

COOL FOODS CAN BE MADE HOT AND HEAVY BY FRYING 
Pomegranate, black Pepper and Cardomon can be added to dishes to maintain digestive heat 

The body is composed of the 5 elements - outside conditions should correspond  to level of moisture or dryness achieved within the system

2 categories of food -
Animals/eggs - Heavy, Earth
Plants             - Light, Water
 

Aromatic herbs grown in DRY places are COLD  and HEAVY in property. Garlic is HEAVY. Matured radish is HEAVY, COOLING and increases Badkhen. Cooked radish promotes the digestive heat and stops dirrhea 
Cooked nettles aggravate Badkhen 

CURDS -  SOUR in taste and post-dig taste - COOLING and unctuous.  Cure dry stools and fever 
Cow's milk helps chronic fever and obstinate urinary disorders like DIABETES (therefore Badkhen) Goat milk cures asthma. 
Boiled milk becomes LIGHT and HOT. 
WATER - Boiled water is best - stimulates power of digestion, helps in digestion of food - after the meal one glass, warmed for Badkhen (with piece of ginger).

FATS: All types of fat are Sweet  (therefore bad for Badkhen)
Mustard oil stimulates production of Badkhen 

GRAINS - rice, wheat, barley etc  - Sweet in taste and post-dig. taste, suppresses Lung and alleviates  Badkhen. 
LENTILS AND BEANS - Astringent and Sweet, cool and light and recommended for Badkhen, fever and diarrhea, blood and tipa disorders.  Paste for a fat person.  Chickpea is effective, red dhal increases all 3 humours. 
Tender radish is LIGHT AND HOT, stimulates digestion. Pork is cooling and light, cures ulcers and diseases associated with Badkhen 'smug-po'. 
Fish, warming,  alleviates stomach disorders and stimulates appetite. 
Eggs cleanses eyes, cures ulcers, abcesses and Badkhen diseases. 
CHEESE AND CREAM - are appetizers and cure dry stool (moisturizing) and Badkhen disease. 
OILS stimulat digestive heat, cleanse internally, fortify the B.C.ís and enhance strngth and complexion. 
Mutton, Yak meat,  Fish PROMOTES APPETITE, FOR TUMOURS, CANCER 
MEATS: Goat - heavy, cold - alleviates imbalance of all 3 humours.  Cures syphilis, smallpox and ulcers caused by burns. 
Beef- cooling and unctuous - cures fevers ass. with Lung. 
Pork - cooling and light. Cures ulcers and diseases associated with Badkhen 'smug-po'.
Yak meat is unctuous and hot - cures cold and aggravates blood and Tipa. 
Chicken  helps in production of semen and treats ulcers (chicken is LIGHT- but WARMER than other meats)) 
Fish alleviates stomach disorders and stimulates appetite. 
Fresh meat is cool
Preserved meat stimulates powers of digestion. 
Meat roasted over a fire is heavy and difficult to digest. 
Dried and cooked meat is light and easy to digest. 

FATS: All types of fat are SWEET - but OILY and HEAVY- not so good for TIPA 
Fresh butter - COOLING,  healthy complexion, strength and cures fever caused by TIPA. 
 
 

DRINKS: Milk is SWEET in taste and post-dig. taste. good for 7 B.C.'s but aggravates Badkhen - cooling and heavy. 
Boiled milk becomes LIGHT AND HOT. 
Buttermilk is ASTRINGENT AND SOUR - cures SPLEENIC disorders and piles, stimulates digestion.
